Australia Day on Wednesday 26th

Here's a little summary about Australia Day for anyone interested.

The day has become the country's biggest annual celebration with over 5000 events across NSW, let alone the other states. It marks the day Captain Arthur Philip landed at Port Jackson (Sydney) with the First Fleet in 1788 and took possession of  the land for the British Empire.  (Sadly in recent years the day is named Invasion Day by Indigenous people).

The day has been commemorated over the years, and it is now a family-community day, with some formalities, citizenship ceromonies and citizen of the year. Along with the formalities, it is a fun day in our area starting with a community breakfast, and a full program of events - ironperson, water skiing display, raft and dragon races, outdoor live entertainment and fireworks, with market stalls and carnival rides on the side. The down side is that the weather forecast is for temperatures of 35C or around 98F, and 39C in western Sydney, this year on 26th. We had a few other options too, we will be doing something a little cooler.

Last year we were staying with my daughter west of the Blue Mountains and her daughter, my grand, sang the National Anthem at their local event.

It is a big day on Sydney Harbour, and we were privileged to be there a few times, starting with an early morning walk over the bridge.  Photos not mine, marked online as 'free to share'.

Have a great week.
