Crumbs of Comfort

“ ......who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God”. 2 Cor. 1:4

 I promised to post about Crumbs of Comfort.

In September 2008 we had to leave a singing group, because of some issues, and we were in the situation of forming our own Group, just the two of us, DH who has a very fine voice and plays the guitar, mandolin, ukulele, and piano-accordian, and me. We attended the Church camp and the theme was “comfort”, as in the verse above and it spoke to us. We discussed this and that how we could use the word and waited on the Lord.... and the answer was “Crumbs of Comfort”. I know that the interpretation of this is often "you've missed out, but there is some small consolation", but I was encouraged finding a very old book on the internet. Our interpretation is that God comforts and encourages us, and we pass on what we can, hence the ‘crumbs’.

Recently DH found a derogatory use of the word crumb... ‘lousy or worthless person’, so I went back to the internet and found a copy of the book “Crumbs of Comfort 1900” by Allie M Felker. Every page of the book is here.Click here for the link
 I immediately ordered it and am now pleased to have my own copy.
 As I mentioned already, all the invites to Aged Care Homes and to perform at Fundraisers have come by word of mouth, we have not ‘sold’ ourselves. We now go to 8 or 9 Nursing homes and get regular invites to other venues.

We don’t have many pics, this is one that an Activities Officer sent us after we sang for them on New Year’s Eve this year. The highlight from that day for me was when I went out and held hands with two of the ladies for Auld Lang Syne, and one of the ladies lifted my hand up and held it to her cheek after the song.
  Here is one of my favourite poems from the book:
The Sweetest Things on Earth by Emma C Dowd
What are the sweetest things on earth?
Lips that can praise a rival’s worth;
A fragrant rose that hides no thorn;
Riches of gold untouched by scorn;
A happy little child asleep;
Eyes that can smile, though they may weep;
A brother’s cheer; a father’s praise;
The minstrelsy of summer days;
A heart where never anger burns;
A gift that looks for no returns;
Wrong’s overthrow; pain’s swift release;
Dark footsteps guided into peace;
The light of love in lover’s eyes;
Age that is young as well as wise;
A life with right in true accord;
A hope-bud waxing into joy;
A happiness without alloy;
A mother’s kiss, a baby’s mirth,
These are the sweetest things of earth.
