I stay home on Australia Day

I remember some wonderful Australia Days in the past.  Walking over the Sydney Harbour Bridge at 6.00am, the wonderful Tall Ships on the Harbour, the aerial display, all the goings on in Hyde Park and Darling Harbour.   I was there the day this pic was taken in 1988.  Pic thanks to google search.
In those days it was maybe a flag on your T-shirt or a sticker on your bag..... that was plenty, and I was happy with that.

We've lived in the country since retirement, but it has all changed..... isn't that what people are tired of hearing from older people.   Still I don't forget the first time I saw all the staff at a local supermarket draped  in the Australian Flag.

Flag etiquette is an interesting read.
"Dignity of the Flag
The flag should not be allowed to fall or lie on the ground".   etc

Now the shops are full of flag gear and the TV news shows that it is now the thing to wear the Australian flag on Australia Day.
So you can see I have turned into an Australia Day grinch and prefer a quiet day at home.

I used to enjoy getting out for Canada Day (like your Australia Day). But the older I get the less I enjoy heat and crowds. Our crowds are quite sedate and don't tend to drape our flag on their bodies. They usually wave a small flag instead though I now prefer to stay home and relax sometimes watching festivities on the television. I hope you are having a lovely week.

Penny, I've tried to send this reply by email twice now, and had the fail notice each time.

Yes the crowds have something to do with our reluctance to participate also, and the thought there will be nowhere to park... though this year they were running buses to the venue for our local govt area, still one might want to come home at a different time! Often it is very hot, but the temp was mild this year, a very grey day.

This is the last week before all our usual activities resume, including group exercises and walking. School resumes tomorrow after the summer break since about third week of December. All other activities take a break too, the heat being one factor and children to mind the other, or family holidays... bearing in mind that a lot of grandparents are involved with childminding.

Hope your week going well too.
Love and Blessings.

We enjoyed a lovely day at church with a guest preacher and a BBQ lunch at church afterwards. It would have really been special to celebrate 1988 Australia Day in Sydney.

HI Jan, you've given me much to think about. I have a flag we hang between the fruit trees here on Australia Day. It doesn't touch the ground, but a beach towel with the Aussie flag most certainly hits the sand when we use it at Phillip Island. Hmmm... to ponder.
Blessings xx

I don't blame you Jan. Although that 1988 picture is pretty impressive!
